Professor Jean-Etienne Joullié, lecturer and researcher at EMLV, and Professor Anthony M. Gould, PhD, full professor of labour relations at Université Laval (Quebec, Canada), took second place at the 2023 Annual General Meeting of the Academy of Management, in the Outstanding Article Divisional Award category.
Their paper, ‘Having Nothing to Say but Saying It Anyway: Language and Practical Relevance in Management Research’, was published in the Academy of Management Learning and Education.
Rewarding authors and editors of published articless
Each year, at the Annual Meeting, the Academy of Management rewards the authors and editors of articles published during the previous year in each of the Academy’s six journals.
These journals are Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Discoveries, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Academy of Management Perspectives and Academy of Management Review.
The article, published in English by Professor Jean-Etienne Joulli and Professor Anthony M. Gould, entitled ‘Having nothing to say, but saying it anyway: Language and practical relevance in management research’, analyses why management research, although it follows apparent scientific protocols and is supposed to be practically relevant, often is not.
At the heart of the study
The researchers analysed and examined the ‘implications for practice’ sections of leading management journals as a basis for their study.
The analytical-synthetic distinction, fundamental in logical positivism for reporting scientific results but rarely applied in management academia, reveals that management researchers who engage in science, as conceived by logical positivists, generally use language of little use to managers.
The reasons for this situation are explored, and corrective measures are proposed.
The selection process
The Awards Committee for each journal determines the selection process, which generally focuses on advancing the publication’s mission and presenting original, essential and provocative ideas.
Reviewers provide timely and thorough assessments. The editors then form a separate advisory committee to select the article or articles from the previous year as the “best article”.
