Carolane, Class of 2013, Independant Trader and Financial Content Writer in Andorra

Carolane de Palmas arrived at EMLV 10 years ago, with this aim of becoming a Product Manager. But by the end (Year 4 and 5), she chose to specialize in Corporate Finance AND fINANCIAL mARKETS. Today, she juggles with numbers in the world of trading.

The young woman created her own company in Andorra (Gaura Gauza, SL). She is a freelancer. Her job: to help online brokers and financial websites attract more readers/clients by providing financial content.

At a crossroads

From the first day at EMLV, I wanted to become a Product Manager, I already had everything planned! But everything changed, as you will read below…here is how it was supposed to happen:

Year 1 and 2: General knowledge of Marketing (that I loved), Finance (that I hated) and HR (that I was discovering);
Year 3: Year abroad (Erasmus and Internship),
Year 4 and 5: Marketing Specialization.

But of course, nothing happened as expected!

I decided to choose a Master in Corporate Finance (2012). After spending a year in Germany (6 months in Schwenningen with Strategic Management, International Marketing Strategies, Corporate Culture, and Leadership; then 6 months in Berlin for an internship at GetYourGuide), I discovered the world of trading and ever since I was sure that I wanted to work in trading and I came back at EMLV with this idea deeply rooted in mind.

From France to Andorra

At the beginning, I worked in France at Highwave360 where I helped the company to launch its technical analysis software for the stock and currency markets. Then, I was lucky enough to get a contract with a broker I was trading with. It was about making explanatory videos, as well as providing market analyses and educational pieces that aimed at improving client knowledge of trading and macroeconomics.

At that time, I had already left France to settle in Andorra and I used social networks (especially LinkedIn) to share the content I created, which helped me to get more and more job offers.

Becoming a freelancer

I then became a “digital nomad”: all I need is a computer and an Internet connection. I help online brokers and specialized trading sites to attract more readers (or customers) by providing them with unique and specialized financial content.

Some of my clients are looking for a complete content offering to expand the reach and influence of their blog (or the “education” section of their sites), while others seek to improve their existing clients’ knowledge of trading. I also work with a couple of content marketing agencies. I have SEO skills and I help them improve the content management of their clients.

How EMLV helped me with my business

At EMLV, I saw economic and social issues from a different angle – one that was related to Corporate Finance & Financial Markets. Now, what was the most important thing was how these issues influenced the different asset classes, investor psychology and the evolution of financial asset prices.

Currently, more than half of the courses I followed at EMLV are used directly to produce my content including Portfolio Management, Risk management, Technical Analysis, Behavioral Finance, and Macroeconomics applied to Financial Markets.

I kept in close contact with two professors: Jean-Etienne Carlotti and David Furcajg. They impacted my professional career and also helped me a lot personally.

For students, I would give some advice: I think it’s really great to know what you want to do in life. However, I also think that you have to be curious and open to discovering new things. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a job that suits you better than the one you were thinking of at first – even if it means changing direction.

Do not be afraid of change. Do not be terrified if you do not really know what you want to do when you enter EMLV. The most important thing is to find a job that gives a real meaning to your life, a job for which you want to wake up every morning – because a job that excites you will give you motivation and energy…and this is what will push you to realize your dreams.

Oh, one last thing… Dare to work and live abroad: people love Frenchies abroad!
